I had a really fun time being one of the Guest Artists teaching art to a wonderfully creative group of 7-9 year old boys and girls as part of The July Art Exhibit Extravaganza at Nelson Youth Centres in Burlington.
The 3 week Summer Support Program focused on self-esteem and safe expression of feelings and I was asked to help them create self portraits. The children did a wonderful job creating really expressive self portraits with vibrant colours and included things they loved in the background. I saw a common theme amongst the group with lots of video game references which was really fun. I found they also did an excellent job mixing skin tones on their own – which can be challenging for many artists!
Last week was their Art Exhibit which included all of the art that they had created in their classes with the different artists that came to work with them. I’m so proud of the wonderful job these young artists did!
From their website:”Nelson Youth Centres is an accredited children’s mental health centre that provides group based treatment programs for Halton’s children and youth and their families. Our services target children who are experiencing moderate to severe emotional, social, behavioural or learning problems, which result in difficulties at home, school and the community.”
“We provide therapeutic services to strengthen the abilities of children, youth and parents experiencing difficulties. We focus on helping children and youth acquire skills and resources to realize their full potential.”
I really enjoyed working with everyone at NYC. It is a great program and service that they provide with wonderfully caring staff and the children all were very happy and proud of what they created!
