When I was in O’ahu, I quickly realized that sunset was an event. And an event not to be missed! Like everyone else it seemed, I began planning my days so that I could find a prime spot to watch the beautiful sun go down each night.
People would fill the restaurant patios as time got close and it was often hard to find a seat if you didn’t get there early. There were also scores of people on the beach with their cameras, waiting. I find with photographs and with paint it is hard to capture that magical moment like a sunset in the same way as you experience it, but it is always fun to try.
For this little painting I did as part of my Sketchbook Project series, I painted a sunset I experienced one night as I walked down Waikiki Beach. People were ready and waiting as usual and the boats all lined up along the horizon, some it seemed getting as close to the sun as they possibly could to watch.
The sun that evening was the biggest roundest sun I had ever seen and it slowly dipped into the ocean as the colours changed. A magical event and a beautiful memory!
