I have been fascinated with and have painted Lotus Flowers for many years but the very first time I saw a Lotus Garden in person was when I was in Papeete Tahiti. The island itself is magical beyond words, one of my most favourite in French Polynesia, and there is so much incredible beauty and so much to take in everywhere.
I visited a tropical garden park on the island that included an incredible Japanese Lotus pond – there must have been hundreds in this marshy areas ranging in size and colour. I was literally in heaven as I climbed in as close as I could into the marsh area without getting wet to take some close up shots of these incredible flowers.
This little painting I did for my Sketchbook Project Series is from a photograph from that day in Tahiti. As I painted this I remembered how excited I was to finally see these flowers in person, and when I shut my eyes I can picture the beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush greenery that stood behind me and the crashing waves of the turquoise sea up ahead in the distance. Definitely a moment that will stay with me for the rest of my life!
